When Mahatma Gandhi arrived in South Africa,he quickly discovered that his rights were unfairly limited. 1913, Mahatma Gandhi launched his first large-scale satyagraha campaign. The satyagraha, or “holding onto truth” movement, united people in nonviolent actions to achieve change for the betterment of society. People across the country’s spectrum joined in full support. The supporters faced many dangers during the protests, but in accordance with Mahatma Gandhi’s principle of nonviolence. After a result, 20 years after Gandhi had first set foot in South Africa, the poll tax for Indians were abolished and Hindu marriages given due recognition.
