There was this one particular story of a woman who was morbidly obese, loading up her cart with Twinkies and macaroni and cheese and as I say in the book, the Twinkies made me do it. Before I was vegan, I would go into the gym and do little workouts. I thought I was doing really well, I didn’t want to push myself. I felt like the gym was something I had to do and go and get through to be healthy. After I switched to a vegan diet, I noticed much more energy in my workouts. I noticed my body started changing. I started getting more muscly, looking more toned, and being stronger.

That’s how we came up with the idea for the first PlantBuilt in 2013. Robert Cheeke was involved, and it was Marcella and I from Vegan Muscle Fitness. And it was Giacomo and Dani from Vegan Proteins. We kind of assembled this with several other people, and we flew out to Austin, Texas, and competed in the Naturally Fit Super Show, which is a bodybuilding and multi-sport event there in the summer.
